Sun 26 Nov 2006  League
Waterside Wanderers 2
Coyles FC 3

Denny Wigington (1)
Chris Corney (1)
Andrew Scott-Douglas (1)

As the team turned up to the game the heavens started to open in true typical Melborne Park style, but thankfully this down poor had stopped by the time the game got underway.

Kick off was delayed due to the nets not being pegged down properly so once this was rectified the game got underway with Waterside kicking off against a Coyles side that were looking for their fifth consecutive league victory.

Straight from the kick off Andy picked up the ball and went on a run past three Waterside players, only for his left footed strike to curl just wide of the goal.

Jamie then gathered the ball and sent the ball upfield to Andy whose header found Corney. A magical touch put him through one-on-one but unfortunately his half volley went just wide of the top corner.

With play spreading end to end Coyles had a number of corners. Twice a Waterside player was needed to clear the ball on the line, first from a header from Andy and then from Ross Maguire.

The remainder of the first half was quite an even affair, with Waterside perhaps having the better of the chances. A few defensive errors allowed Waterside a few chances but Jamie was up to the task and dealt with everything.

HALF TIME - WATERSIDE WANDERERS 0-0 COYLES FC

Both teams came out in the second half both wanting to secure three points, but it was Waterside who started the brighter.

Against the run of play Coyles got a free kick just inside their own half and Chris Hine stepped up to take it. The ball was clipped in towards the box and a defensive mix up by Waterside allowed the ball to run into the box where Denny found himself one on one with the keeper and cooley slotted the ball into the net.

Play was then even for the next 10 minutes or so but then Waterside got an equaliser the fully deserved. They broke forward and a shot from the edge of the box was excently saved by Jamie, however the Waterside strkier reacted first and put the ball into the net.

Watersdide then heaped the pressure on the Coyles defence and quickly went 2-1 ahead. Good interchange down the left by the Waterside players left the midfeilder one on one with Bridges. He dived in and let the winger round him easily allowing the cross tho come in, and a brilliant finish at the front post by the Waterside striker gave him his second of the game.

With 20 minutes to go the game was nearly over. A through ball allowed the Waterside striker one on one with Jamie. He slotted ball underneath and started to celebrate, however the ball stopped in a puddle on the line and was cleared by Chris Hine. A lucky escape for Coyles.

This seemed to wake the team up. Maguire, as he had done all game was bossing the midfield like a true general. Andy dropped into midfield and Baldwin went up top, with Bridges being replaced on the right by Piggott.

Coyles then started to pile on the pressure and a great ball from Chris Hine put Corney through. Unfortunately he could not quite get a connection and the ball was ran off for a goal kick.

With 15 minutes to go Coyles got a corner. A great delivery from Denny allowed Andy to rise like a salmon and head the ball into the net for his 6th goal in 3 games.

Coyles were now having the better of the game and Maguire was putting in a man of the match display. He tried capping this display with a goal but unfortunaletly his strike went very high and very wide of the goal.

With 5 minutes remaining Coyles won another corner from great work down the left from Brad Hoare, who had worked tiredlessly all game.

Another good delivery from Denny Wigington was needed, and was poduced.

The ball dropped at the far post and Chris Corney pounced to put the ball into the net with true strikers instinct for his 3rd goal in 3 games.

Brad Hoare then had the chance to wrap the game up finding himself one on one with the Waterside goalkeeper. He tried to chip him and nearly pulled it off but was denied by the keeper from scoring his first goal for the club.

As the whistle blew, Coyles were relieved to have picked up the points, showing true character to battle back from the jaws of defeat. A man of the match display from Ross Maguire drove the team on, with Jamie arguably having his best game in goal this season.

After all, a good team will always grind out the results needed and that is what Coyles had done today to remain top of the league.
